Pursuing Education through ALS and Review tips for UgAT

We have to value education and pursue it in spite of Physical limitations. And we can do that through ALS and Open University. This article is dedicated to Filipino citizens.

ALS stands Alternative Learning System. It is a branch of Department of Education that allows the minority such as Indigent people, Persons with Disability, and Adult or Senior Citizens to finish Primary or Secondary Education through Acceleration and Equivalency Exams.

They are designating ALS Teachers to instruct students by guiding them to learn basic numeracy and literacy skills. Unlike formal way of going to school in fixed schedules, ALS learning sessions usually take place during weekends. It can also be adjusted according to the availability of students and Learning Facilities as recommended by the ALS Teacher.

A&E Examinations pose basic to medium complexity. It means that the questions are geared to assess student’s competence on daily life with the use of Mathematics, Science, Values and Language Principles. Also, their examination puts emphasis on proper framing of reasoning through Essays.

ALS (2012) enumerated that there are files a candidate student must submit in order to enlist. Addressed below are some of the Requirements to join this Education platform.

  1. 2 pcs 2×2 ID picture with Surname, First name and Middle name print at the back.
  2. Any authentic or Photocopy of Driver’s License, Voter’s ID, SSS/GSIS ID, Postal ID, NBI Clearance, Brgy. Certificate with Photo, or Passport.
  3. For students with no job and are under legal age who encountered Dropout, they can submit a copy of Birth Certificate from National Statistics Office.

With a similar platform but more complex than ALS, Open University is beginning to gain popularity as a way to earn Tertiary Education through Distant Learning. It is similar to ALS for its nontraditional learning methods that give time allowance and lesson autonomy so students can learn according to his Phase. However, Open University is harder than ALS because students are expected to adapt to homeschooling with less supervision. It means that there will be minimal interaction with teachers or classmates so they have to cope up with readings and deadlines. Students are also encouraged to learn advanced skills on troubleshooting the Internet or learning how to use Picture, Sounds, and Video Editing programs in order to comply with Online Learning Activities. But Even if OU pose complexity because of its nature, RWU (2017), an independent body that categorizes Institution’s performance, said the University of the Philippines Open University ranked 20th place on the recent grading they conducted. It went ahead against FEU, PUP, and OLFU.
